The FPI fellowships are Pre-doctoral 4-years grants to help graduates
wishing to pursue PhD studies in any area of research. For that, the
FPI call offers positions within specific research projects financed
by the National Plan of Innovation, Development, and Research (I+D+I).

One of these projects  (PNAYA: AYA2009-07391, PI: Torres):
“THEORETICAL AND OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES OF HIGHLY ENERGETIC YOUNG
STELLAR OBJECTS" will allow a candidate to do a PhD in high
energy-astrophysics. During the last few years, this field, and in
particular, gamma-ray astronomy, has experienced an impressive
advancement driven by unprecedented observational capabilities such as
the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi), the High Energy
Sterereoscopic System (HESS) and the Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray
Imaging Cerenkov Telescope (MAGIC). Our group has significantly
participated in this field, both from a theoretical and observational
point of view, and the balance of the latter aspects is a key feature
of our current research and future plans. With the quality of being
directly affiliated with experimental gamma-ray collaborations (Fermi
and MAGIC), this group can directly promote observations and compare
theories with state of the art facilities.

We look for a candidate for a 4-year PhD position focussed on:

Observational or theoretical orientation (for a physicist or
astronomer). In particular, the successful candidate will work on
multi-frequency (radio, X-ray, or optical) observations, and their
interpretation, of Galactic compact objects (neutron stars and black
holes) using the most advanced satellites/telescopes/antennae
available (XMM-Newton, Chandra, Fermi, ESO, VLA, ATCA). This program
is related with the science of the MAGIC and Fermi observatories.
(Candidates with excellent marks willing to do pure theoretical work
are also encouraged to apply).

We seek highly motivated students. We offer to integrate you in a
young team with large experience, with local and international
collaborations, and an amenable day-to-day supervision of your PhD.

It is expected that the FPI fellowship be announced in January 2010
(and close just 15 days after the call is made) and start by summer.
