Dear colleagues,

we would like to invite you to participate in a survey entitled "Recording Processing Information in Pulsar Astronomy".

PSRFITS currently records some provenance information within the history table but it is limited. Our intention is to add to the existing work of the history table in order to accomplish two main objectives:

1) To record a more detailed provenance record within the history table;

2) To visualise the aforementioned provenance in a fashion tailored to pulsar astronomers.

The full description of the survey you can find below.

It takes approx. 5 minutes to complete the survey. To participate, please click on the link below:

<https://survey.pt-dlr.de/index.php?r=survey/index&sid=766698&lang=en><https://survey.pt-dlr.de/index.php?r=survey/index&sid=766698&lang=en>https://survey.pt-dlr.de/index.php?r=survey/index&sid=766698&lang=en

The survey will be active until 12.11.2021, 21:00 CET. Please forward this email on to your current and former colleagues who have worked with PSRFITS files. Each and every input from the users is valuable.

Sincerely,

Marta Dembska & Michael Johnson

Survey description:

Data provenance describes the origin and processing of data, including information about the processes which lead to the creation of the data and other data sources from which it was derived. The main motivations for data provenance are reliability and reproducibility, however it can also be utilised for things such as the assessment of data quality or anomaly detection.

PSRFITS currently records some provenance information within the history table. Contained within this table, there is some information of the past processes applied to a data item, as well as a variety of meta data describing the data at each iteration of processing.

Our intention is to add to the existing work of the history table in order to accomplish two main objectives:

  1.  To record a more detailed provenance record within the history table;
  2. To visualise the aforementioned provenance in a fashion tailored to pulsar astronomers.

This survey was created to collect information such that we may achieve our two objectives.
