Dear all,

I am currently advertising two PhD positions to work on radio and gamma-ray
PTA projects, starting early to mid-next year. Please see the details below
and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

------------
This position offers exciting opportunities to develop novel techniques in
precision pulsar timing and characterize the astrophysical origins of
low-frequency gravitational waves using radio and gamma-ray observations of
pulsars. Detecting the subtle effects of gravitational waves on pulsar
timing data requires robust data analysis techniques and a deep
understanding of the underlying noise processes. Complimentary to radio
pulsar timing, the gamma-ray pulsar timing array uses observations from
NASA’s Fermi gamma-ray space telescope and provides a unique opportunity to
independently characterize low-frequency gravitational waves without being
biased by the interstellar medium. A combination of radio and gamma-ray
data will enable the best constraints on understanding the astrophysical
origins of the gravitational wave background.

Successful PhD candidates will be part of the PTA group at ASTRON and will
be affiliated with the University of Amsterdam. They will join the core
team of "GIGA", an ERC-funded project aimed at pushing the state-of-the-art
of PTA science in radio and gamma-ray wavelengths. They will work with a
vibrant local and international community and with large data sets from
various telescopes around the world.

We are looking for two Ph.D. candidates who have an interest in scientific
data analysis and experience in computer programming.

Details on the institute and how to apply can be found here:

Please note that applications need to be submitted on or before *6 November
2023*. We will be contacting only shortlisted candidates in *early December* to
request their reference letters to be sent to us via email. Reference
letters cannot be uploaded via the application system. We will invite
potential candidates for interviews (in person) on *8 February and 9
February 2024.*

Regards,
Aditya
