The New Athena Science Community (NASC) is the ensemble of scientists
supporting the development of the science case of the mission.



*Membership is NOW OPEN* to scientists at any career stage, including
students, post-doctoral researchers, faculty, research staff, retirees, and
those in private enterprises involved in the NewAthena Study. No formal
prerequisites are required.

*Important note for members of the Athena science community*: due to the
GDPR of the European Parliament, members of the Athena science community
must re-apply to the NASC. They shall not assume that their membership in
the Athena science community can be transferred to the NASC without taking
any actions. *Responding to the ACO call for membership is mandatory to
become a member of the NASC!*

*NASC tasks and duties*

The *NASC will assist the NewAthena Science Study Team* (NASST) in several
of its tasks. These include the definition and maintainance of the Science
Requirement Document (SciRD) and the enhancement of its scope to adapt the
science objectives to evolving scientific landscapes while adhering to SPC
endorsed performance and cost boundaries, the analysis of trade-offs
affecting scientific performance of the mission, the definition of
calibration requirements for the scientific payload, the definition of
synergy strategies with other facilities, the optimization of the Mock
Observing List (MOL) for the mission's 5-year lifetime and the preparation
of the Definition Study Report (DSR).



Additionally, the NASC will have the opportunity to* contribute* to the
Astronomy & Astrophysics Special Issue on the NewAthena science case,
to *promote
*the mission at various events, and to *engage *in public outreach, acting
as *ambassadors *for NewAthena and its science.

*Working Groups (WGs)*

The NASC is organized into the following thematic Working Groups (WGs):

   1.

   Large-scale structure of the Universe
   2.

   Galaxies and supermassive black holes
   3.

   Stars and planetary systems
   4.

   Compact objects
   5.

   Transients and multi-messenger astrophysics
   6. Cosmology and fundamental physics
   7.

   Science Support

It is recommended to apply for a maximum of 2 WGs, but applying for more
would be considered if duly justified. Applicants must express their
*motivation* aligned with NASC goals and should specify their desired *level
of involvement,* which may be either as a Chair, an Active Member, or a
Support Member. It is important to note that *only one CHAIR **position*
can be requested.
