Doctoral Student position in pulsar astronomy at Bielefeld University and MPIfR

Applications are invited for a position as a doctoral student in the field of pulsar astronomy, to be taken up at Bielefeld University, in close collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institute for Radioastronomy (MPIfR) in Bonn.

The group at Bielefeld University is deeply involved in projects and collaborations that make use of MeerKAT, the most sensitive radio pulsar observatory in the southern hemisphere, and precursor of the future SKA1-mid Observatory. 

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on different projects related to the science of pulsars in globular clusters, involving both pulsar timing and searching, primarily with MeerKAT data. Specifically, the successful candidate will work on the derivation and physical interpretation of long-term timing of several pulsars in selected globular clusters, using data taken within the TRAPUM and MeerTime projects, as well as archival data from other radio telescopes. The selected candidate will also be highly involved in the activities of the ERC-funded project “COMPACT”, which aims to discover the most extreme pulsars and binary systems in Galactic globular clusters using innovating pulsar searching techniques, applied to MeerKAT and Effelsberg radio telescope data.

As the Radioastronomy group at Bielefeld University has a long tradition of low-frequency pulsar observations with LOFAR (the LOw Frequency ARray), and is leading one of the German stations within the German Long Wavelength (GLOW) Consortium, the successful candidate will also have the chance to contribute to the LOFAR operations and related scientific activities.
