At ASTRON, we discover and investigate radio transients, to better
understand highly magnetised neutron stars, and binary neutron
star coalescence. We study emission from pulsars and fast radio
bursts, and both the prompt radio emission and afterglows of
neutron-star mergers. In our CORTEX research program, we focus on
real-time studies of the dynamical Universe, to shed light on the
astrophysics driving pulsars, fast radio bursts (FRBs), and
gravitational-wave (GW) afterglows.<br>

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION ON FAST RADIO TRANSIENTS (‘SCIENTIST A’)<br>
<br>
Job description:<br>
We are looking for a post-doc to join the CORTEX team, and take a
leadership role in its scientific exploitation. This position has
the potential to push forward the frontier of astrophysics. A
background in radio astronomy is desirable, in time domain and/or
imaging. Experience with machine learning or digital signal
processing is a plus. Candidates with a track record of research
on FRBs, pulsars, or compact-object simulations and theory are
especially encouraged to apply.<br>

You will be a member of a team of about 6 staff, post-docs and
students, led by Dr. Joeri van Leeuwen, that design and run
imaging and fast-transient surveys and projects on all major
global radio facilities. Our general interests range from binary
neutron-star evolution and gravitational-wave detection, to
instrumentation and pulsar/fast transient searches.<br>
<br>
Job requirements:<br>
A PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a related discipline;<br>
Experience with radio astronomy (time-domain and/or imaging)
and/or relevant theory;<br>
Solid publication experience in refereed scientific journals;<br>
Good planning and organizational skills;<br>
Very good communications skills in English, and a team player.<br>
<br>
The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch
Collective Labour Agreement Research Institutions.<br>

A gross monthly salary in the range of €3.241,- to €4.363,-
(full-time salary) depending on experience, and 42 vacation days
per year (on a full-time basis);<br>
A holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.33% of the
gross annual salary, plus a solid pension scheme (ABP);<br>
Generous relocation expenses and support with finding
accommodation.<br>

The organization:<br>
ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy, is located
just outside Dwingeloo in Drenthe. Its mission is to make
discoveries in radio astronomy happen via the development of novel
and innovative technologies, the operation of world-class radio
astronomy facilities, and the pursuit of fundamental astronomical
research. ASTRON hosts a vibrant research environment with strong
technical expertise and influence in the new generation of
emerging radio facilities. As the NL national radio astronomy
institute, ASTRON also plays a leading role in several of the
consortia contributing to the scientific and technical design of
the SKA. ASTRON also currently hosts JIVE, the Joint Institute for
VLBI ERIC.<br>

CORTEX is funded by an NWA grant from NWO, The Netherlands
Organisation for Scientific Research. The consortium, led by van
Leeuwen, includes all Dutch astronomical institutes, with many
top-rated groups in related fields of astrophysics, such as radio
and x-ray pulsar timing, gravitational-wave detection, and
high-energy astrophysics.<br>
